Coruscant: Ground Rules

"Prone to cynicism and a stubborn independent streak, Kira Carsen is an improbable recruit to the Jedi Order. This is partially excused by the fact that she began her Padawan training as a young adult; Kira had spent most of her life up to that point as a homeless drifter, scraping out a miserable existence on some of the galaxy’s most unpleasant worlds. Thanks to her hard-luck upbringing, Kira has considerably more life experience than most Jedi–and a world-weary sophisticate’s attitude to match. In the eyes of her peers, Kira is someone who refuses to take anything seriously or fully commit to the Jedi path. Those who look more closely, however, might detect the glimmer of an optimist peeking through Kira’s sarcastic facade. Despite her insistence on questioning its teachings, she has a deep appreciation for the comfort and relative safety she obtained by joining the Jedi Order."

"How did you do that, really?"

Idilan looked at Kira, as they made their way to the spaceport; logs on Lord Tarnis' equipment indicated data on the Republic's secret weapons had been transmitted to an hyperspace transceiver in Ord Mantell; General Var Suthra wanted the Jedi to investigate. "Do what?"

"You know, stay all cool and..." she gestured vaguely "whatever, when a Darth was threatening death and destruction?"

"What would have you done, Kira?" Idilan watched her more purposefully, which made the Padawan frown.

"There you go, you are being all Jedi again. We are about the same age, aren't we? And you act all wise and composed and you never raise your voice" Kira sighed. "It's creepy."

Jedi = good Teeseven whistled and beeped.

"Better than me, you mean" the young woman frowned at the astromech.

"I've been raised in the Order, Kira" Idilan intervened softly, before an argument started. "You are a new student."

"...and that means?"

"Means I had more time to adapt and adjust. It's not that I don't feel, but I learned to control my actions and reactions" he paused a moment. "Emotion, yet peace. Ignorance, yet knowledge. Passion, yet serenity. Chaos, yet harmony. Death, yet the Force."

The mantra made Kira stop and stare a bit at Idilan. "What is that? Sounds a bit like the Code, but..."

"It's the mantra of Maravada the Silent, a Je'daii master from Tython; I discovered the recording while investigating the ruins of Kaleth" he smiled a touch at the recollection, pausing on his stride as well. "You have to strive for self-control, and it includes denying a Sith the fear and anger he wants to provoke."

"So, you fought a whole day all across Coruscant, you knocked down the Guild, Black Sun, the Justicars, and a Sith Lord, you saved billions of lives... by being calm about impending disaster?" Kira sounded skeptical.

Idilan pondered the question a moment before answering with a nod. "Yes, that's what I did."

Teeseven's whistled droid-laughter did not make Kira happy; after a minute or so of standing there trying to decide if she was the butt of a joke or not, the Padawan hurried after the other two.

"During the Great War, the Jedi Order was granted use of Republic military vessels, but these starships proved unsuitable for the specialized assignments Jedi often undertake. Eventually the Jedi Council decided to commission a new corvette, custom-built for Jedi missions. The Defender-class corvette is built on two decks, maximizing the use of available space for state-of-the-art facilities supported by military-grade flight systems. Although peace is a key tenet of the Jedi, so is self-defense: in case of hostile action, the Defender can make use of a powerful attack and defense array of weapons, shields and advanced countermeasures."

"Welcome aboard this Corellian Defender-class Light Corvette. It was custom-built to offer a Jedi both first-rate combat performance and meditation amenities."

"Thank you, C2-N2" Idilan looked around the spacious main deck of the ship. "You can give me a full tour later, right now we need to prepare for takeoff." He then turned to T7-O1 "Teeseven, the bridge is yours. Run a check-out of all systems while I contact airspace control"

"What about me, Master Jedi?" Kira was, of course, being cheeky. "Any ground rules? Master Kiwiks let me do whatever, long as I wasn't in her way."

"It's a big ship, Kira, there's plenty of work; while we're on space, I trust you to find useful things to keep busy with."

"Nifty" she nodded to the knight and turned to the new droid. "I'll take that tour then, Seetoo, show me every corner of the ship."

Leaving the factotum and the padawan to their exploration, Idilan joined Teeseven in the bridge and activated the Fleet Command comm. "Come in Coruscant Control. Jedi knight Idilan Arael, under General Var Suthra's command, requesting permission to launch."

"Permission granted, Master Jedi. We're finished uploading the latest astrogation charts available; your callsign is CA-Shield. Good hunting."

"Thank you. Teeseven, take us out and set a course for Ord Mantell."
